Today a group of 15 members of Presbyterian Youth NSW, head for Japan to learn about what God is doing there among the Japanese, have their vision stretched and be an encouragement to our Japanese brothers and sisters. They will learn from APWM missionaries Nathan and Tomoko Stewart in Osaka, and hear from the Chiba (Tokyo) team where Adam and Helene Ramsay serve.
This is a joint venture between APWM and PY NSW. We hope to repeat this in 2020. Thank you David and Angela Bell for leading the group!

Why not give a gift that keeps on giving this Christmas? Through the APWM Christmas Catalogue you can support the work of those who serve in other cultures and help spread the gospel.
This year we have a range of gifts that will be a blessing to others.

Many may not know his name but yesterday, after 9 years service, Alex Shaw resigned as the APWM National Committee Convener. We are very grateful to Alex, and his wife Sybil, for the way that they have served us, sometimes in some very tricky situations.
Alex and Sybil serve with Global Recordings Australia (GRNA). This photo is typical of Alex, who is never one to miss an opportunity. Here he hands a GRNA Sabre audio Bible player to the Prime Minister of Vanuatu and urges him to listen to the Bible.
We are grateful that Brett Graham, the minister at Mosman Presbyterian Church is now serving as the Convener.
In November 2018, APWM ran a 5 day training workshop for South Sudanese Presbyterian pastors who serve in the refugee camps in Gambella Ethiopia. This is a strategic ministry that needs ongoing financial support. www.apwm.org.au/supporting/finance/

Danny and Jen Cooke, from Orange NSW, are among APWM’s newest missionaries. In 2019 with their four children, they will serve on the island of Tanna at the southern end of Vanuatu. Danny and Jen will be serving under Pastor Maliwan Taruei, the subject of Robert McKean’s book “Cargo Cult to Christ”.
Danny and Jen recently attended the Presbyterian Church of Vanuatu’s Assembly which was held on Tanna, not far from Sulphur Bay. At the Assembly, they were able to meet many key people and commence planning their ministry.
If you would like to know more about this ministry or join their partnership team then please go to www.apwm.org.au/supporting/finance/ or contact the APWM National Office.
Many of you will know that over the last few months APWM has been gathering money to buy 33,000 Bibles in the Nuer language for the South Sudanese Presbyterians who live in the refugee camps in Ethiopia. Each Bible costs $10.
These refugee camps house 385,000 people. About 100,000 of them belong to our sister church, the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan.
We are grateful for the approximately $66,000 that has been given to date (June 2018).
This means that 6,600 lives will be changed. Many of these people will have their lives shaped by the Word of God and will tell others what they have been reading — the impact of this will be tremendous!
Consider what God says in Isaiah 55:10-11
As the rain and the snow come down from heaven,
and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
We’re encouraging the congregations in the Presbyterian Church of Australia to show the video and hold a collection to help provide for this great need. You can download a flyer here to copy and distribute among your congregation.

In 2013 civil war broke out in South Sudan between the two major tribes — the Dinka and the Nuer.
Many South Sudanese fled to neighbouring countries with little more than the clothes they were wearing. In the neighbouring country of Ethiopia, the refugee camps house 385,000 people. About 100,000 of them belong to our sister church the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan.
What do our brothers and sisters ask for? Bibles in their mother tongue — the Nuer language. In 2017 APWM sent 3,000 Nuer Bibles but what are these among so many? APWM would like to purchase 33,000 Nuer Bibles plus ‘Talking Bibles’ for those who are blind and illiterate — as well as some audio recordings of Scripture for soldiers in the conflict.
Late last year I was in these refugee camps. As I heard the request for Bibles I thought “If one Bible could change a life, imagine what 33,000 can do!” It is estimated that each Bible will cost $10. If each member of our church gave $10 then we could easily meet this need.

A family serving in cross cultural mission often faces hard choices when their eldest child approaches the end of their primary school education. How do they provide a secondary education for their children when the local options won’t adequately equip them to qualify for tertiary education in Australia? One way to assist such families is for teachers from Australia to go to the field and serve these families by teaching in a mission run school. This enables the families to remain on the field and be even more effective.
In 2018-2019 (i.e. now) Bingham Academy, an SIM associated school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia needs two English teachers, a teacher for French and a teacher for Geography.
http://binghamacademy.net
But these needs exist beyond Ethiopia. Schools associated with SIM alone (by no means the only evangelical mission schools) are currently praying for:
19 Upper Elementary teachers, 25 Lower Elementary teachers
5 school directors, 24 administrators and support staff
19 Music teachers, 15 Art teachers, 25 Information Technology teachers
55 English Second Language teachers, 18 Special Education teachers
15 Maths teachers, 24 Science teachers, 13 Bible and RE teachers
20 English teachers, 13 Language teachers (mainly for French)
20 Social Science teachers, 26 Physical Education teachers
And that is by no means all!
Perhaps God is leading you to fill some of these needs. If you’d like to know more then please get in touch with the APWM office – office@apwm.org.au
