John and Rosemary Evans serve with the Presbyterian Church in Japan in church planting in Chiba City, near Tokyo. In Japan, APWM works in partnership with ‘Mission to the World’ (MTW), the overseas mission arm of the Presbyterian Church of America. John and Rosemary commenced service in Japan in August 2012 and are currently settling into ministry, learning the language and seeking to understand Japanese culture. Chiba prefecture is located to the east of Tokyo. The MTW strategy is to plant churches in areas with new housing estates that are within commuting distance of Tokyo. The churches planted as part of this project are among the few churches in Japan that are actually growing.
Japan is the largest unreached nation in the developed world. Japan has one of the highest literacy rates in the world, yet 950f Japanese have never read or heard the gospel. One of the struggles faced by the church is that in a nation of 125 million people, the church is relatively small.
